Dutch Pot in Diaspora is a vibrant anthology of poetry, visual art, and cultural storytelling that stirs the soul as deeply as it stirs the pot. Rooted in the language of food and the memory of kitchens, this collection brings together Black youth artists with connections to Scarborough to reimagine food sovereignty, ancestral recipes, and the ways our meals carry resistance, love, and legacy.
Inspired by the Caribbean cooking vessel known for holding flavours over generations, this book simmers with creativity—each page a serving of art that honors the past and feeds the future. Whether through poetic reflections on market days and family reunions or layered collages of mangoes and memory, these pieces ask: How do we reclaim our right to eat, create, and remember on our own terms? Can a recipe hold the weight of a legacy? Can food be a form of protest—and a poem?
This anthology is a collective offering made possible through the Youth Engagement Scarborough Initiative by Guild Festival Theatre and curated by Jasmine Vanstone.
