Settle in Sediment is a collage, ceramic, and found object installation that draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of my Jamaican heritage. Through intuitive artistic expression, I explore the profound connection to one of Jamaica's most celebrated exports - coffee - and the power of rooting oneself in natural elements like clay and the land for holistic wellness.

“Settling” has diverse meanings, but I wish to highlight the references to determination, migration, and contemplation, as each component has sub/consciously informed the way I relate to my materials and community.

Cultivating Care is a digital design created for Kimberly J Lopez's Cultivating Care-Full Futures Research Program @uofwaterloo ~ Kim is an amazing human and with co-researchers, investigators, and community partners, the research program aims to facilitate efforts toward: body-care labour praxis, body-mind restoration, and alternative kinship formations.

THe main inspiration behind the piece is Ginhawa, a Visayan concept embodying breath, life, ease, and well-being. In this work, breath becomes both liberation and connection: the air that flows through care labourers, healers, and dreamers across geographies as they make roots in new homes.

Cultivating Care envisions home not as a structure, but as a sensation of warmth, nourishment, and breath shared between bodies. It invites us to imagine futures built through care-full reciprocity where healing is collective, rest is radical, and every inhale is an act of resistance.

🎂💫As I make another trip around the sun, I look back at my childhood. I still have to think about how old I am when people ask, those covid years feel like a blur but I've grown sooo much. Time is a funny thing - it passes so quickly when you're living in the moment and slowly when you live in the past. I've changed a lot and my art has seen so many places and lives on so many walls, shoulders, and hearts. I am grateful to see another year and have so many reflections to share through my art, my stories, and my voice.

♎️This year, I hope to curate more memories of joy with loved ones (family, friends, community) and focus more intentionally on social wellness~ Maybe a new memory I create this year has you in it (yea the person reading this right now) ☺️

I just came back from Camp @helloreset and let me tell you, I am an introvert with social anxiety who was hesitant to be 3 hours North of Toronto @waldencanada with no access to tech and sharing space with 250+ people BUT I ended up lovinggg it!

I rarely share about myself on Insta (or anyone for that matter) but I'm so glad I stepped outside of my comfort zone and took the leap to prioritize my social wellness. I learned a lot about myself and connected with people who truly impacted me! So many deep conversations, laughs, and open hearts made me reflect on who I am, the people that make me, and the energy I bring to spaces (and my handy dandy fanny pack). I will forever treasure my crew and the memories made 🫶🏽🍋💕

👩🏽‍🎨 Ever since my first mural for @friendsofkensingtonmarket Future Without Oppression curated by @curtia I've developed a passion for public art & murals. I'm excited that through this residency I will get to bring together my love for arts facilitation and desire to 💫lead💫 a community-engaged public artwork that will live in Richmond Hill~

The CreateSpace Public Art Residency is a national public art program that provides emerging Black, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis), and racialized artists with the skills, relationships, and practical experiences needed to build their public art practice. Who knows, I might dabble into a new medium through mentorship~ (no spoilers👀)

I remember when I was younger I would write so many poems about birds stuck in a cage - trapped in the confines of cold bars. But not this bird, this bird is recuperating to take flight beyond the borders of self-doubt in this piece titled You Grow Through What You Go Through.

This collage was created (in company of exhibit neighbour & collaborator @sunofaquarius ) and featured in @torontotyes ResilienTOgether Amplifying Voices exhibit (thank you @tonyxtones for the opportunity! 🥰)

And NOW a 20” x 30” photo lamination print is up for 💫AUCTION💫 to support @ywstoronto Time4Change fundraiser for this year’s theme “grow through what you go through” in partnership with @artsetobicoke

I have grown through so much and will continue to do so with an open mind and heart~ 💖

I remember when I was younger I would write so many poems about birds stuck in a cage - trapped in the confines of cold bars. But not this bird, this bird is recuperating to take flight beyond the borders of self-doubt in this piece titled You Grow Through What You Go Through.

This collage was created (in company of exhibit neighbour & collaborator @sunofaquarius ) and featured in @torontotyes ResilienTOgether Amplifying Voices exhibit (thank you @tonyxtones for the opportunity! 🥰)

Year 2 of vending @queenwestartcrawl with @vibeartsto was a blast! Still getting the hang of this whole vending thing~

I got to connect with many through my art and even had conversations around community arts programming, my JYCC program, what it's like facilitating for children vs. youth, and even zodiac energy. Featured are two lovely patrons - one a repeat customer and the other a Pisces - who sparked excitement for me in our convos!

Still taking the TTC @takethettc for transporting my works for exhibits and grateful to @northyorkarts for letting me use the office cart! A major upgrade from a grocery buggy and bags on bags on bags for the trooper experience.

Grateful to @pioquez and @kayprigaro for supporting me, especially to our knight in shining armour who lured in dog lovers and held them captive with head pats and art (mostly head pats thought lol)

Had a fun time getting messy with clay @gardinermuseum for “Mark Making: Narrating Our Histories”!

When creating "Settle in Sediment" I was just experimenting with the clay while under @sharonnorwoodartist guidance (I have been dubbed a Sharon's Angel). During my intuitive artmaking, I enjoyed getting my hands messy and seeing my first work come out of the kiln!

A story transformed from interacting with the earthen material. I knew I wanted to highlight my culture and the importance of reconnecting with nature to develop a wellness practice, but I didn't know what the story wanted me to say. With each slab, slip and score, and spray of water, I tapped into naming my series "Settle in Sediment"

A long long while ago (October 2021), I got to visit @agotoronto Arts of Global Africa and the Diaspora with @vibeartsto NExT 3.0 cohort! It was very inspiring to see the Caribbean showcased and learn more from curator @julie_zacfilms.

When I was walking around and listening to the tour, I was able to find words and visual language that inspired the creation of my Persephone's Panganat series. [prints available in bio]

Focusing on found poetry, collage, and self-affirmations, 8-10 youth will explore the basics of Canva to create a printed anthology photo book that documents their collective wellness journey during this 6-week long program. Participants will be led through design elements such as color, composition, and storytelling to strengthen their artistic voice.

🌱This workshop is open to 8-10 youth ages 16-25, living in North York – BIPOC youth will be prioritized.

Designing terracotta pots and planting wildflower seeds with community was a fun-filled outreach initiative to promote NYA's program Around Art and Land. Responding to the needs of the Land by acknowledging, celebrating, and committing to its care, taking home a piece of art that grows to support pollinators was a great way to celebrate our roles as caretakers for the environment.

3 months ago I had the opportunity to exhibit Persephone's Panganat, my first ever group exhibition through @vibeartsto NExT Black Mentorship Program at Meridian Arts Centre @tolivegram. Such a journey that I am proud to have experienced alongside talented artists.

🌸Mentored by @munayosan , I learned how to create a solid artist statement that shares my struggles while being emotionally vulnerable. 😌Taking time to ground myself during this process helped me to have difficult conversations without feeling burnout or anxiety. Immensely grateful for the foundation I built with you Nayo!

🌸Mentored by @tonyxtones , I was exposed to The Artists Way, a book by Julia Cameron that shares how to harness your potential during the creative process. 😊Also appreciated so many tips and insights on how to network, studios to shoot on a budget, and his go to spot for frames. Shout out to @theframemaker_cabbagetown for the gorgeous frames on my prints!

🌸Mentored by @kofis_art , I learned about exhibiting, how to put myself out there as a person with social anxiety, and the ins and outs of setting up a print shop. (Still working on social media presence cuz my page is dry af 😂) but I now have tools to work through this! Shout out to @qsq_giclee who fulfilled my first order from @levislux !

Peperomia Obtusifolia🌱

Over the Winter, I participated in the Wellness Connect program at @niacentre where #youth and #emergingartists explore wellness through an artistic lens to support the exploration of #selfcare practices and guide us on our #wellness journies. This was a life-changing experience because I learned about so many practices (Kemetic yoga, stress management, food prep and fitness, mental health & childhood trauma, and more!), connected with others in a safe #healing space, and was able to talk with an amazing therapist who helped me with shrinking my social anxiety in just 5 sessions.

🌱One of the Wellness Connect sessions was planting Baby Rubber plants with Jo from @noiregirlsplant . We were taught about the special blend of elements in the soil to help with drainage, the best beginner plants, how to care for our Baby Rubber plants, and connecting with our plants through goal setting and positive affirmations. When we were potting our Baby Rubber Plants, we wrote on a small piece of paper our main intention or affirmation for the next year.

Looking back, I can see just how much I have grown already and... that I never had a #plant that lasted this long lol. (Even though I am an admirer of nature, I definitely do not have a green thumb.)

💖This drawing is a reflection of the vibrant, future-forward, self-actualizing, and healing energy I am harnessing in caring for myself and my Peperomia obtusifolia.

Whenever I hear this, I jump to SpongeBob and Patrick using their imagination to play -inside- an empty box.

What does 'think outside the box' even mean? The common definition is to think in an original or creative way. The way I interpret thinking outside the box is when boxes (our imaginations and lived experiences) come together to build forts and castles.
